Motion is not magic—it signals “this is a finished publication,” not a draft PDF someone forgot to attach. Used with restraint, that cue can keep people on the page longer; used carelessly on a 300-page manual, it gets old fast.
Flat PDFs feel like work. A page flip gives a spine, a corner to drag, a sense of where you are in the stack. For lookbooks and annual reports, that small theater matches how brands want to be seen. The risk is overdoing it: if every turn takes a second and a half, people with something to do will bail.
Marketing gloss and short magazines often suit 3D or realistic book templates. Procedure manuals, price books, and internal handbooks often read better in 2D flip or the vertical reader—less flourish, more “get me to section 4.”
Time-on-page goes up when the content deserves attention, not when the animation loops forever. Try two templates with the same PDF and see which one your audience actually finishes.
